Adelaide Peak (2,280')

Adelaide Peak (or as it is colloquially called, "Marine Corps Hill") is the highest point in the southern anchor of the Temescal Mountains.  The peak overlooks the southernmost reaches of the Inland Empire, offering views of the Temescal Rift Valley, the Perris Block, San Diego County and more. While the BLM Preserve is surrounded by encroaching homes and offers no official entrance, it is a pleasant trip well worth a visit  if you are in the area.

The Hike:  From the corner of Nutmeg and Via Sarah in Murrieta, head northwest past the roadside-railing onto a dirt road.  Follow it as it passes by the backyards of some homes before it turns north and enters into the chaparral.  Having lost immediate sight of the suburbs, the trail becomes far more enjoyable.  You will soon have a full oversight of the preserve, and red-stained Adelaide Peak in the distance.  Then, the trail drops about 70' down into a small ravine, which upon entering you will turn right onto the creekside path for about 0.5 miles.  After emerging from Oak-strewn hollow, you will find yourself at a fireroad, which is to be taken east.  Unfortunately, none of the many crisscrossing trails here are named, marked, or mapped, and are often abused due to the many dirt-bikes and quads which score their marks upon the land.  This often leads to confusion on how to attain the summit; but if you follow any trail/road in the general direction towards the peak you will find yourself overlooking the city of Menifee and a locked gate, and passing the peak itself.  Walk past this gate about 15', and take another path right up the northside of the peak up to the brushy summit.  Return the way you came.
